SDE Optimizing Conditions
ASDE surveys all SDE communities/programs about how they provide, enhance,
or align with each of the Six Optimizing Conditions
for young people to succeed in SDE. Survey answers:
- Responsibility – Children are in charge of their learning. They plan, make decisions, reflect and share what they've learned.
- Youth Autonomy – Children are free to decide what, when, how and with whom to learn. The staff is there to facilitate and offer activities.
- Access to Tools and Technology – We provide construction tools, materials, kitchen utensils and computers.
- Adult Allies – We do not have grades or testing. Adults are facilitators: they help children in their activities and they act as role models.
- Free Age Mixing – We currently welcome children age 5-12. They all participate in the meetings and are free to take part in any activity, no matter their age.
- Community – Children and staff members collaboratively build the weekly schedule. New ideas and problem solving are discussed more formally during meetings.
