My Unparenting
A poem about unparenting

I have done nothing right
except to watch you grow,
so beautifully into the beings
             you are and always were.

I have done nothing right
except to leave you the fuck alone,
all the while as I fed you
             and nurtured you
             and protected you
             and fought with every ounce
of my body
of my soul
to let you have the rights
             that are your rights
             that are your being.

I have done nothing right
             except to love you
          for who you are
and not who I want you to be,

to be there for you
you gorgeous people,
my children,
my colleagues,
my heart beats.

I love you.
                I love you.
