SDE Optimizing Conditions

ASDE surveys all SDE communities/programs about how they provide, enhance, or align with each of the Six Optimizing Conditions for young people to succeed in SDE.  Survey answers:
  1. Responsibility – Children learn to be responsible, self-determining members of their community through participation as voting members in school meetings and the judicial committee (conflict resolution process).
  2. Freedom – Students have freedom to develop projects, participate in classes, suggest and develop new curriculum, play outdoors, form friendships, and pursue their interests to reach their full potential.
  3. Access to Tools – Makarios offers a wide variety of activities, books, curriculum, toys, pets, technology, and equipment to engage students’ interests.
  4. Nonjudgmental Support – Staff works with students to create a safe learning environment that allows kids to reach their full potential in academics and personal development. Staff engage with students one-on-one to support the pursuit of their unique interests and goals.
  5. Age Mixing – Children ages 3-6, 7-12 and 13-18 may opt into a designated time of learning enrichments that are developmentally appropriate. Students of all ages are encouraged to engage and interact with one another throughout the school day.
  6. Healthy Community – At Makarios we respect each student’s voice so they learn how to communicate effectively and get their needs met in all areas of life.
