play:groundNYC is preparing to reopen for the 2026 season. Also referred to as the “junkyard playground,” our adventure playground lets young people shape their environment using an assortment of loose parts: materials, tools and objects.

Playworker Responsibilities
Following 5-6 days of rigorous and paid training, responsibilities will include:
• Supervising child-led play in a dynamic setting.
• Collaborating with the play:groundNYC team, including fellow playworkers, executive and administrative staff, and board members to document and reflect on play experiences through written assessments and team meetings.
• Attending regular staff meetings which might take place outside of working hours at The Yard.
• Maintaining The Yard, including restocking and organizing materials as needed, making repairs, and identifying hazards, in cooperation with the play:groundNYC team, as well as making suggestions for improvements
• Routinely assessing risk/benefit and inspecting the space for safety, documenting findings and changes made in our risk/benefit assessment forms and site check logs.
• Occasionally serving as “front desk representative,” greeting families, maintaining protocols including waiver requirements, safety guidelines, answering questions, and soliciting donations.
• Facilitating and supporting play at off-site programming, such as school recess programs and community pop-ups throughout New York City.
