The Village Free School is a center for Self-Directed Education that enrolls young people ages 5-18 in the Portland area, registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The school is staffed by a team of facilitators who wear many hats– teacher, mediator, mentor, and administrator– to name a few. Staff practice non-hierarchical leadership, which works because we show up in care for each other and this community. Self-Directed Ed facilitators act as caregivers, resources, and support for the young people in the space. We show up in our authenticity, with respect for the pace of trust and mutuality of relationship building. We hold space for growth, play, and exploration without an agenda or judgment. We are committed to our own personal work, including that of deschooling, and we practice healing and growing in community.

A great fit for this job would be someone who:
– Can reliably show up to open in the morning at 8:30 am on your working days
– Is excited to work with young people in an anti-adultist setting
– Wants to share in their interests and passions with others
– Self-directed and motivated in a non-hierarchical working group
– Open to collaborating with co-facilitators
– Committed to the work of deschooling, decolonization, and conflict resolution
– Strongly encouraged to apply if you identify as BIPOC, LGBTQIA+
