SDE Optimizing Conditions

ASDE surveys all SDE communities/programs about how they provide, enhance, or align with each of the Six Optimizing Conditions for young people to succeed in SDE.  Survey answers:
  1. Responsibility – Students are entirely responsible for how they spend their time, what and how they choose to learn and for preparing themselves for adulthood.
  2. Youth Autonomy – Students spend the majority of their time determining their own activities. Participation in meetings and organised activity is by choice with the exception of the Judicial Committee and cleaning where everyone is expected to play their part.
  3. Access to Tools and Technology – Students have free access to the resources available within the building and the surrounding area including technology. They also have the facility to request new resources according to need.
  4. Adult Allies – A team of staff members support students and are available to support but not to guide or coerce. We record engagement in activity and students personal progress to comply with local regulations but never test or judge students unless requested.
  5. Free Age Mixing – Students aged 5 to 18 mix freely with each other and staff. Students are never segregated by age or any other defining characteristic.
  6. Community – All members have an equal weight vote in all decisions which are taken at a weekly meeting. Conflicts and rule breaking are handled by the Judicial Committee which is comprised of a rota of students and staff.
