Description
Wheelhouse Tas Inc is a non-profit organisation that runs a self-directed learning centre for youth aged 11-18. The members are mostly home educated, with a few who e-school or have education exemptions.
The centre is open three days a week. In addition, fortnightly excursions are offered.
Wheelhouse also offers free events and opportunities throughout the year to home educating families with children of all ages.
SDE Optimizing Conditions
ASDE surveys all SDE communities/programs about how they provide, enhance,
or align with each of the Six Optimizing Conditions
for young people to succeed in SDE. Survey answers:
- Responsibility – Our members attend our centre at times that suit them, and sign up for the workshops and tutorials of their choice. They may choose not to participate in any formal learning, and that’s fine too. There is no pressure to learn anything particular.
- Youth Autonomy – Our members engage in self-chosen activities 100% of the time, though we expect them to tidy up after themselves.
- Access to Tools and Technology – All members have access to all our tools and resources.
- Adult Allies – We ensure our volunteers understand self-directed education if they are not already familiar. There are no tests, grades, or curriculum. What we do have is really lovely inter-generational connections.
- Free Age Mixing – Our centre caters for 11-18 year-old youth, who all mix together freely (with each other and adult mentors). We sometimes run events for children of all ages.
- Community – Our workshops and excursions are arranged and offered in response to our member’s requests. They also help plan our events
