Yuegu Learning Community is a trusted environment rooted in self-directed education, where every member is encouraged to grow at their own pace. Freedom, autonomy, and self-determination—supported by our unstructured, mixed-age approach—form the foundation of our unique educational ecosystem. Within this setting, each individual embarks on a journey of self-discovery, emerging as a self-disciplined, confident, and responsible lifelong learner, equipped with well-being and happiness.

SDE Optimizing Conditions

ASDE surveys all SDE communities/programs about how they provide, enhance, or align with each of the Six Optimizing Conditions for young people to succeed in SDE.  Survey answers:
  1. Responsibility – At Yuegu, the core feature is self-directed choice. Children make decisions and take responsibility, driven by intrinsic motivation rather than external pressure.
  2. Youth Autonomy – Yuegu offers a trusted space for ages 8–18 to be heard and respected. We believe youth can explore their interests and the world without external grading. Students manage their own time and pursue their genuine passions.
  3. Access to Tools and Technology – Yuegu provides diverse resources—AI tools, makerspace, instruments, books, sports gear—and embraces “learning beyond walls, everyone as teachers, the world as textbook.” It integrates spaces, mentors, peers, and city facilities for holistic l
  4. Adult Allies – At Yuegu, staff engage as equals, not authorities. Though many are elites—like Olympiad coaches, top-university graduates, and entrepreneurs—they learn, explore, and grow alongside students, fostering a self-directed educational community.
  5. Free Age Mixing – Mixed-age interaction is natural: younger children respect and learn from older ones, while older ones learn to care and enjoy an extended playful childhood. With clear rules ensuring safety, it's a key factor in our model's success.
  6. Community – At Yuegu, we learn to handle freedom through co-governance. Beyond living and activities together, we decide how we live. Councils and a judiciary empower members to jointly govern the community.
