SDE Optimizing Conditions
ASDE surveys all SDE communities/programs about how they provide, enhance,
or align with each of the Six Optimizing Conditions
for young people to succeed in SDE. Survey answers:
- Responsibility – Young people co‑create their classes and set SMART goals, positioning them as the owners of their own education .
- Youth Autonomy – Innovation weaves in ample unstructured time—through mixed‑age groupings and outdoor project-based learning—allowing Innovators to delve deeply into interests, engage in spontaneous play, and develop autonomy.
- Access to Tools and Technology – Innovators aren’t limited to abstract learning; they actively experiment with technology and creative tools—bridging exploration and real-world competence, while safety and guidance are embedded through adult-facilitated learning.
- Adult Allies – The network of adults at Innovation Learning Lab—Guides, facilitators, and staff—serve as allies. They support, listen, and guide.
- Free Age Mixing – Innovation embraces mixed-age learning (ages 5–20), where older and Innovators mentor one another of various ages. All people share passions with curiosity, modeling inquiry and fostering a community of peer support and leadership.
- Community – Innovation anchors in emotional intelligence, inclusion, and relationship‑centered learning: Innovators, families, and Guides co‑create each year, forming a cohesive community of trust, shared purpose, and support.
