SDE Optimizing Conditions
ASDE surveys all SDE communities/programs about how they provide, enhance,
or align with each of the Six Optimizing Conditions
for young people to succeed in SDE. Survey answers:
- Responsibility – Students choose their own learning activities.
- Youth Autonomy – Students are supervised for safety and respectful social interactions with each other and the natural environment. They are allowed to play and pursue their interests without interference otherwise.
- Access to Tools and Technology – Tools are provided based on the students’ interests (eg. Buckets, magnifying glass, wood carving tools, books) and they have access to the natural materials in the forest.
- Adult Allies – We are building a community of like-minded families. We do not do any grading or testing.
- Free Age Mixing – We do have a little kids group and a big kids group but the age ranges are flexible, and we host weekly community gatherings open to all ages.
- Community – Our program runs weekly and decisions are made collaboratively based on where each student is at on a particular day. I ask each student what they’d like the day to include, and we come up with a plan together, with flexibility.
