SDE Optimizing Conditions

ASDE surveys all SDE communities/programs about how they provide, enhance, or align with each of the Six Optimizing Conditions for young people to succeed in SDE.  Survey answers:
  1. Responsibility – Students choose their own learning activities.
  2. Youth Autonomy – Students are supervised for safety and respectful social interactions with each other and the natural environment. They are allowed to play and pursue their interests without interference otherwise.
  3. Access to Tools and Technology – Tools are provided based on the students’ interests (eg. Buckets, magnifying glass, wood carving tools, books) and they have access to the natural materials in the forest.
  4. Adult Allies – We are building a community of like-minded families. We do not do any grading or testing.
  5. Free Age Mixing – We do have a little kids group and a big kids group but the age ranges are flexible, and we host weekly community gatherings open to all ages.
  6. Community – Our program runs weekly and decisions are made collaboratively based on where each student is at on a particular day. I ask each student what they’d like the day to include, and we come up with a plan together, with flexibility.
