Description

At Kamui Kids, our mission is to foster creativity, self-directed learning, and passion-following in a safe, supportive environment for children and adults. Our inclusive community values trust, respect, civic service, and unlimited opportunities for play and self-discovery. We empower children to embrace their individuality and find purpose in nature, self-expression, and personal growth.

Our vision is to create a society that values authentic living in harmony with nature. We prioritize trust, play, autonomy, and flexibility, where lifelong learning inspires creativity and critical thinking, and success is measured by finding meaning in living. Empathy and compassion drive our shared humanity, and we are once again enchanted by art, storytelling, and music. Ours is a society where everyone is valued, and everyone can be exactly who they are without judgment.

We plan to explore a myriad of spaces at Kamui Kids, including art, storytelling, music, craft, nature, agriculture, community, culture, food, tradition, permaculture, right livelihoods, appropriate technology, raising animals, play, self-directed education, exploration, adventures, and more.

SDE Optimizing Conditions

ASDE surveys all SDE communities/programs about how they provide, enhance, or align with each of the Six Optimizing Conditions for young people to succeed in SDE.  Survey answers:
  1. Responsibility – Children are in charge of their own learning, with supportive facilitators. We operate within the philosophy of Agile Learning Centers.
  2. Youth Autonomy – Children are free to choose how to spend their time and days. Facilitators document learning by meeting with children and discussing their intentions.
  3. Access to Tools and Technology – We have tools for arts and crafts, staff with a diversity of skills and backgrounds, a full kitchen, and a future tinker/maker lab. We will have WiFi and computers, along with various digital tools to support myriad individual learning endeavors.
  4. Adult Allies – All adults believe in and trust children fully. We allow every and any emotion and treat children exactly as they should be: as human beings. We believe that every human has an inalienable right to their own voice and desires.
  5. Free Age Mixing – All our children are free to play with any other ages. We have no age segregation.
  6. Community – Everyone in our community has an equal voice, regardless their age. Adults work hard to understand and honor the choices of children.
